WeAreBack just released the sourcecode for the WabModcheap - an application which lets you run your backups without installing a modchip. You can connect your Wii to your PC (using a selfmade cable) and then use the application to simulate a modchip!
Includes source code AND a Windows binary!
EDIT: Thanks Juan for finding this cheapmod.pdf (pdf)
EDIT: new video found for proof!
Cable instructions:
WARNING: NOT NOOB FRIENDLY! If you cannot understand this, this is not for you!
In order to make the datacable, you need only a few basic items. A DB-25 connector, two diodes, and some cable. Connect the diodes in reverse (so, PC —|< --- Wii) to the DB-25 connector, to pins 1 and 14. Just connect some wires to pins 18 and 11, these will be the GND and output wires. The other two dioded wires are clock and input. Now, open your Wii, remove the DVD drive, and turn it over. Look for the following pattern near IC3001 (http://wiire.org/Wii/console/disc_drive):
- 1 -
2 3 4
- 5 6
3 is SBO1 (Output)
4 is SBT1 (CLK)
6 is SBI1 (Input)
With the numbers being pads, and - being nothing. Now, solder the wire from pin 1 to pad 4 (CLK line). Pin 14 goes to pad 6, and pin 11 goes to pad 3. Just find a suitable place to attach the wire from pin 18, which is GND. (Placing the board so you can read the writing on IC3001, look at connector P3001, the rightmost pad is GND and the third from the right is GND). Check your solder connections with a multimeter, then close up your Wii, and issue the ./dvdtool -r 0x8000 command in root mode. If you see hexadecimal numbers, congratulations! If you don't, check the proper functioning of your cable, wether or not you're in root mode, and if the parport0 and ppdev drivers are properly installed.

4umm… if this mod only needs the pc and no modchip, then why are we soldering anything to the wii?
This is not a replacement for a mod chip, this is only using the computer as a modchip. you still have to solder in the wii AND you have to connect it to your computer when you want to use it AND you have to run a program on the pc.
If I’m gunna crack the case, I think I will be putting in a dvd upgradable chip in there. takes less time (dont need to make a custom cable, dont need to remove the dvd drive) and doesn’t require me to sling another cable across the room.

7Hard to say but I’d at least wait til the Wiip and the Wiikey come out. Those two hold the most promise IMHO. You still have to solder the chip into the Wii though so it’s bye-bye warranty and if you screw up, it’s bye-bye Wii.

8But the cable is really easy to make. Only two diodes and UTP cable and a little soldering iron. Ill try it out this weekend… the question is… normal diodes or what kind???
If it works, ill make a noob guide…well if no one does it first.

9@ Joe, you may as well try this before the Wiip or Wiikey come out, plus there is less chance of you screwing up your Wii this way
@ Juancarr: I cannot check right now, but when I am back home I will look up what kind of diodes you need (if you want to work on a guide with me I am up for it also!)

10Just as i suspected, someone made one faster than me, but the guy never uses diodes, but he has a great method of making the cable, especially since he solders all the necesary points, INCLUDING the ones needes for all the instalation of future modchips. (That means NO REOPENING weeeeeee!)
timelf123, where can i send you this guide so you can upload??

14Hey man, i sent you the guide. Check it out.
Do you think this mod plays PAL games on an NTSC console??

15I wouldn’t try it unless your TV can support PAL, because I tried something like this and my TV went crazy… So until we know for sure, I would stick to NTSC…

16Ok, i tried it out but it didn“t work and i almosted fucked up my wii. I got all the wiring but my pc woudnt recognize the port and i was too stressed out to keep on trying. Anyway, I quit and got the cyclowiz which i discovered IS upgradeable. Too bad it didnt work, but maybe it would work on someone else.

17@ Juan
Thanks for trying it out, this is definitely for the hardcore cheapos
Maybe it was just the instructions you found with no diodes?
I just ordered Wiip, so I will tell you all how that goes when it comes sometime next month
Until then, I do not want to attempt this cheapmod for now
